Welcome to The Adoption Center!
MISSION STATEMENT
The Adoption Center NY, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 all-volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of puppies and dogs, kittens, cats, who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, sick or otherwise unwanted. These are wonderful animals who would otherwise have been destroyed either in kill shelters, or die by the cruelty of a homeless life on the streets. We also work to educate people and stimulate interest and concern in the prevention of abuse and neglect of cats and dogs via our own efforts as well as cooperate, co-sponsor and otherwise engage in concerted action with various recognized organizations, both private and governmental agencies, in fighting the abuse and neglect of animals. HOW WE DO IT The Short Version: We bring our puppies and dogs to pet stores near you where you can, and will fall in love! Look for the kittens and cats we have for adoption on Pet Finder TM and call us to make an appointment to meet the kitty of your dreams! The Detailed Version: Rescue / Rehabilitate / Rehome We accept rescued animals from “boots on the ground” rescue organizations and kill shelters. Then, The Adoption Center procures professional veterinary care for all these rescued animals including spay and neutering, shots, worm and flea treatment. They are placed in loving temporary homes (all food and supplies supplied by us). There they learn basic behavior skills, trust and learn to love again. Once ready, the pups and dogs will “Meet and Greet” the public in pet stores that vigorously support pet adoption, we attend various adoption events sponsored by private or municipal organizations, and all pets for adoption are featured on Pet Finder TM one of the most successful on-line adoption programs in the nation. Generally, we do not bring the cats to the pet stores, as most cats do not do well in a busy store environment. Then tend to be shy and hide, so people do not get to see their true personalities. Instead we provide photos and information and then arrange for a private meeting. This has been a very successful approach. We always require an application for adoption and an interview with the potential adopters to best determine if the pet of interest is a good fit for that particular family environment. A reference from the adopter’s veterinarian is required. At the time of adoption, instructions are given and it is clearly explained on how to introduce the new pet to any existing pets in the home. Verbal and written instructions are given on food requirements, medical etc. Adopters must agree by contract to bring the pet to their veterinarian 15 days after adoption to insure that all is going well and to get any pending follow up vaccines. Other Rescue Programs: Stray and Feral Cat Assistance: Additionally, we support local TNR programs for feral cats, providing information to their caretakers on where to get low cost spay/neuter, how to set up or purchase shelters and feeding stations, and when colonies are located on private property (supermarkets and the like) we provide suggestions on how to gain the support of the owners in order to gain permission to come onto the property and care for the cats. Education and Support to the Public We participate in speaking engagements at schools or other organizations, as well as work to disseminate information to the general public regarding the proper care and treatment of dogs and cats via literature and suggestions on where to find help on-line. Guidance for Emergencies When we get calls regarding someone finding abandoned or injured animals, we provide advice and make every effort to help the caller locate immediate assistance through our network of rescuers, veterinarians, and emergency clinics. Some of our Colleagues: Kids Adopt A Shelter, CPR Rescue, Animal Rescue Force, Volunteers for Animal Welfare, Paw Pact Alliance, Pet Philanthropy Circle and many others. We have also launched our first rescue video on My Pet World TV on “You Tube”. SUMMARY: All in all, The Adoption Center NY might be considered an “umbrella” organization for local rescues. We do not believe that rescue groups should view themselves as being in competition with each other. We are all working toward a common goal. If someone is looking to adopt an orange cat or a certain type dog breed and we don’t have one, we pass the word around to other rescues who might. We encourage all rescues to do the same. It is a simple concept – IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ANIMALS. |
